Adsense - Tip #2: Make an effort to reach the top rankings in the search engines

Adsense - Tip #2: Make an effort to reach the top rankings in the search enginesWe know already that if we want to be successful with Adsense, then we must have traffic. Without traffic it is not possible to take advantage by Adsense. And one of the biggest traffic sources to the websites, and actually the bigger, are the most important search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Ask.

But, we all know that to receive a great amount of traffic from the search engines it is necessary to fulfill two conditions: the first one is to rank in the search results with keywords that are frequently queried by the users; and the second one is that our website is in the first positions and if that is in the first page (Top 10) would be much better. Actually, if your site is listed beyond the third page of the search results you can consider it invisible for that specific search.

But, how we can achieve this? That is what we try to do with SEO techniques: Search Engine Optimization.

Basically, these are a list of tasks that try to do the site more relevant for any keywords. And although nobody can control the algorithms of the search engines unless he works in the company that owns that search engine, in some way it is possible to do that the algorithms play to our favor if we do things correctly.

There are two ways for doing SEO, basically: The white SEO and the black SEO. As you can imagine, the white SEO refers to “legal” techniques that are not trying to have a website looking more relevant when it really is not for a specific topic, but rather it is trying to have a really relevant website due to the well positioned contents, important links and facilitating the indexing process. On the other hand, the Black SEO is a way of confusing the robot in order to give to the website some extra points although it not deserve them under normal conditions from the “point of view” of the algorithm.

Keeping in mind that it is better to do things “legally” for the success without risks in the long term because the algorithms become more and more refined and they can penalize or even ban a website if some “fraudulent” techniques are detected, we say that there are two kind of tasks in SEO: Onpage optimization and Offpage optimization.

The Onpage optimization refers to the developed tasks inside the website affecting the content that is read by the robots. The most important factors in a Onpage optimization are: Unique content in your site, Keyword Use in Title Tag, Keyword Use in Body Text, Relationship of Body Text Content to Keywords (density), Keyword Use in H1 Tag, Keyword Use in Domain Name, Keyword Use in Page URL, Keyword Use in Alt Tags and Image Titles, Keyword Use in Bold/Strong Tags and Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure. (We will write about each factor soon). Possibly, Yahoo and MSN are still giving an important weight to these factors while for Google the weight is minor than the Offpage factors, although these are important. That is to say, to rank high it is necessary to have a good Onpage optimization but it is not enough.

The Offpage optimization refers basically to the way that is linked a website from others external websites and the importance of these websites. The most important factors in a Offpage optimization are: Anchor Text of Inbound Link, Global Link Popularity of Site, Age of Site, Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site, Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community, Global Link Popularity of Linking Site, Rate of New Inbound Links to Site, Manual Authority/Weight Given to Site by Google, Verification of Site with Google Webmaster Central and Age of Link. (We will write about each factor soon). Nowadays, Google is the most important search engine and the Offpage optimization really make a difference between a website that is in the first page of the Google’s search results and the page 10 (for instance).

Having said that, we must keep in mind always that in the web “the content is the king”. Your content must be worth because if it is not worth, you could have some good rankings, but it would not be a sustainable situation in the long term. Don’t think that you are superior to the whole group of Google’s engineers and that you will trick them and will trick the algorithm forever. That is a typical error. With worthy content in your website, you can become an relevant authority in your topic inside the web and that assures good rankings in the long term.

We will discuss each factor deeply soon, but in the meantime we remember to you some excellent resources to inform and learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimization):

Rich Dad Lessons: Cashflow quadrant

Based on Kiyosaki’s work

Rich Dad's Lessons: Cashflow quadrantThis is a very basic lesson from Rich Dad’s philosophy. But, always it is good to remember the basic things.

There are four methods to make money. The cashflow quadrant (in the picture) illustrate this point. Four basic methods and four types of personality with regard to the money.

The first method is to work for a company, a person or the government: being an employee. It is a common method for a lot of people, from students to important managers in big corporations. The employees sell their time for money. And usually they take orders from a boss. The best of this: financial “security” (the income arrive every week but, come on!, nowadays it is difficult to talk about financial security for employees). The worse of this: they are not very free, unless they really enjoy the job. In short, if you are an employee, then you work for your boss, your company or the government.

The second method is to work by yourself without boss: being a self-employed. It is a common method in several professions: engineers, lawyers, accountants, doctors… They do a job without supervision and they are committed for finishing a well-done work on time or be advisers for a project. Another type of self-employed people are the owners of a small business: restaurants, stationeries, bars, stores; this type of self-employed people actually work into their business and usually they are the “soul” of the business, although they can have several employees to help to do the work. They are relatively free for deciding if they will do a work or not. The best of this: this relative freedom. The worse of this: usually a self-employed works a lot of time because they compete with companies and other self-employed people. Actually, in most of cases they work harder than employees, and they can make a lot of money if they are really good. A mediocre self-employed always will have low incomes from his work. Many self-employed will age very soon because they work many hours per day. In short, if you are a self-employed, then you work for yourself and really can say: “I enjoy the fruit of my work” (but it could be a small fruit or a big fruit).

The third method is by creating a business where you can have people working for you: being a business owner. There is a difference between the owners of small businesses in the second method and the business owner in this one. In the second method they are employees without a boss. They have to work in the business and usually the business depend of them and the time that they dedicate. In this third method they don’t need to become employees into the business unless they want: they have people doing all the necessary tasks. If they are on vacation, the business continue operating. They build a business system and then look for talented people to run it. And always they are the big boss. The best of this: Freedom to decide (you are the big boss and the system is yours); if the business is successful, then you really can make a lot of money and be rich. The worst of this: risk (90% of business ideas will fail, then you need to be very perseverant). In short, if you are a business owner, then you have people working for you.

The last method is by investing: being an investor. But you only will be a real investor if you have appropriate financial education, experience (including some unsuccessful investments) and cash surplus to invest (you can put food on the table even if your investment fails). We don’t talk about a stock broker that really is an employee in most cases. We talk about the people that know where to put the money and earn a lot of cash while the time is running. They invest in three basic things: real estate market, stock & financial market and shares of businesses. The best of this: a successful investor have financial freedom. The worse of this: It is not easy to become a real investor: you only will be a real investor if you have knowledge, experience and cash surplus. In short, if you are an investor, then your money is working for you and maybe you don’t need to work.

The first and second method are the left side of the Cashflow quadrant. Most of people are in the left side. It looks like as if people prefer the security instead of freedom. Sometimes people really love their job, but the world is full of fearful people doing a job that they hate and the only reason is to have a check to pay their obligations and life expenses (the rat race). It is the typical path for poor people and mid-class people.

The third and last method are the right side. The real rich people are in this side. If you want to have financial freedom and you are not rich, you need to focus yourself on leaving the left side and go to the right side. It is not easy but if you are perseverant and intelligent, then you can reach your goals. But many times it requires to change your mind about the money topics. Education is the clue.

Ok, this is only a basic lesson from Rich Dad. In following days we will expand the topic.

Adsense - Tip #1: have a nice website

Adsense - Tip #1: have a nice websiteA lot of people think that to have success with Adsense we must find a magic formula. A secret formula that somebody will try to sell to the incautious people. Sometimes in Internet you will find ads of courses or books talking about that magic to increase the Adsense’s check. And incredibly, always there are customers for those ads.

But, as almost everything in life, the common sense is more effective than any secret formula. Sometimes, the common sense is despised because, for any reason into our mind, we imagine the success like a complicated thing. The reality: if we applied the common sense to get success with Adsense, we should dedicate enough time to do the changes in our website, having analytics tools and mainly being very very perseverant, knowing that we always won’t be ascending in the life and sometimes will must adjust the stuffs in the site.

The simple thing is: if you want to have profits with Adsense, then you must have visitors. And to have real visitors and not simple “sniffers” that only remain in the page during 5 seconds and then go out by pointing the browser to a better site, we must have a great website. A great website combine all these elements: a good graphic design (and sometimes in that sense: the simplest is the best), original content that is useful for the users, an easy way to browse and a main topic that is really interesting for the target audience.

Besides of that, the technical stuffs must be fixed: check periodically that your HTML don’t have issues in the most used browsers (Internet Explorer 6.0/7.0, Firefox), make sure that people can get any internal page in a easy way and with a few clicks (not more than 3), check the outgoing links and take out them immediately if they are broken: the broken links will affect your popularity in any automatic system that scan your page (search engine robots, feed readers, etc).

And of course, keep in mind that today the sites with community sense can act much better than the informative sites with little interaction of the user. To that it refers the concept of Web 2.0: for users the web is not only about reading (capture the information from the Internet) but about reading and writing (to capture and generate information) and surely in the short future it will be about reading, writing and executing web platforms more complex.

But in the present it is important that your site have any level of interaction: maybe a blog where people can put the comments, or a forum where there are debates by topic, or a “wiki” system where the user can generate and edit the content, or at least a simple poll. Maybe, these interactive systems are not very useful if your site have little traffic but when it increases the visits, then you will see the multiplier effect into a community behind your website.

Think of your website as a service. And in this way, you should try to have the best service for your customers: the visitors, although most of them don’t pay you a nickel. So you should not leave an email coming from your “Contact Us” section without reply. And it is not necessary to say that you must have a contact form or public email. If your INBOX begins to be saturated, find the way to treat this situation: a simple autoresponder or a system of frequent questions (FAQs) could be useful in some cases and those are very easy for implementing.

To win with Adsense, you must attract the people. Then, you should publish attractive things. And in fact, the attractive things are not the common things that every site publish. Your content must have something special: a differentiating element.

Neither forget that some people are not so comfortable in the computer screen as when they are in front a book: don’t seek that everyone read long epistles of text in your website. Be concise: if you are concise, then your Adsense’s ads will be sighted more easily that if you write many paragraphs explaining an idea.

Oh, and remember that a great website is not the most innovative in the world, necessarily. Always, people is getting used to see certain things in Internet and sometimes they are overburdened with a site trying to be very innovative by doing the simple things in a different way. That is good for other circumstances but maybe not for a site seeking to make a lot of money with Adsense. Although, it could have exceptions.
