Adsense - Tip #7: The Adsense’s ads should match with the appearance of your site
Do you like the TV? When a TV show is interrupted with some ads, do you change the channel? Probably yes. And many people do it because they prefer to see if there is something more interesting in the other channels instead of “wasting time” by seeing advertising.
The same thing happens with the on-line advertising. People learn how to differentiate what is a real content on a website and what is an ad. Therefore, people learn how to ignore the advertising, quickly. Maybe not all the ads, but most people know they are only ads.
For that reason some on-line advertising campaigns do many things in order to get the attention of the users, and many times the advertisers make a fateful error: the obstructive advertising. Many of us have stumbled with pages that present an obstructive announcement or a pop-up window promoting some product or service, so we close it quickly because we think they are useless when we are looking for information that we really need.
Google Adsense has a great advantage: it is a contextual advertising. The ads are, almost always, related to the content of the page where they are placed and, in fact, they will probably be attractive for the users that arrive by looking for some information or resources, related to the topic of the page.
Regrettably, sometimes many websites make a big effort to label the ads of Google Adsense as simple advertising that can be ignored. Actually, they should be always displayed in this way: as complementary links to the real content of the page.
To highlight the ads, some owners of websites or blogs use colors that not match the normal colors of their websites. Or they only enclose the ads in a box, cell or column labeled as “Sponsors”.
When the ads stand out too much, they are ignored by many users that consider the advertising as the extra thing with no importance, and sometimes (rarely) the ads acquire all the importance, and the real content of the website is ignored. Although the last situation could generate good revenues, it should not make sense for a website that is supposed to be useful.
In order to maximize the income opportunities with Google Adsense, you should integrate the ads fully with your real content by showing them as a part of your content. Use the same colors as the normal links for the links of Adsense. Try to place the ads inside, at the beginning or at the end of the articles, instead of only placing them in the lateral rails or the footer where they can be more ignored.
Keep again in mind that these ads are contextual. They are supposed to be links to complementary resources for your content, therefore Adsense is not just about people clicking on ads so you make money, but it is also about to enlarge the list of available resources for the users. Don’t fear to mix Adsense with your content. If you make it in an elegant way and without exaggerating, you will stop losing many clicks.
