Strategies: Blog Monetization

Strategies: Blog MonetizationMatt Jones from Blogging Fingers has released a free e-book called Blog Monetization Strategies: Make More Money From Your Blog Without Increasing Traffic. It is a short e-book of 16 pages which I have read and I have to say it is a good starting point if you are thinking about making money with your blog or starting a blog to make money. The e-book is centered on these sections:

- Monetization Strategies: Basically, there are two types of blogs. Some blogs are Flagship blogs, which are blogs with loyal readers and high traffic because it has a broader topic. Other blogs are niche blogs where the visitors find the site via a search engine and will leave once they have found the answer to what they want. Depending on your blog type and your visitors, you should apply a different strategy.

- Core Blog Monetization Lessons: If you want to make money from blogging, there are two concepts you need to apply in order to achieve a good monetizacion: diversification and experimentation. Don’t put all your eggs into one basket (like Google Adsense); you need several revenue streams. And you need make a lot of testing to find the best performance of your income streams. Matt also talk about Pre-sell pages and Resource Pages.

- When To Monetize: It is a question without a simple answer. Starting to monetize now or later, have both advantages and disadvantages. However, if your blog is definitely a blog niche, then “there is very little to lose from monetizing it straight away because it does not ‘stunt’ the growth because you are not trying to keep readers on the blog”. The advantages and disadvantages are listed for Flagship Blogs.

Cash blog: Jeremy Schoemaker talk about monetizing blogs

Jeremy Shoemaker is a famous blogger, who is also known as Shoemoney. His photograph with an Adsense check for $ 132,994.97 is a source of inspiration for a lot of bloggers. Obviously, this guy knows how to monetize a website. In the video you can see an interview made by Rand Fishkin from SeoMoz.org during the Search Marketing Expo - SMX West 2008. It is interesting to know that Jeremy don’t think Adsense is the best option to make money by blogging.

ADSDAQ - CPM alternative to make money by advertising

ADSDAQ - CPM alternative to make money by advertisingAlthough Google Adsense is a great option to monetize your website, sometimes there are some cases where you need to look for some alternatives because the Google ads are not performing as well as you want. For example, if you have a videoblog, Adsense may not be the best fit for your site, because they are contextual and the Google spider cannot read the content on video, so the ads could be irrelevant to your audience or the public service ads could be displayed often.

Another choice you can use is ADSDAQ. It is a marketplace where advertisers and publishers are connected in order to trade advertising (CPM ads, not CPC). Basically, if you have an ad space on your site, you ask for any price you want in order to sell it. Unlike other ad networks, if some advertisers match with your criteria, then ADSDAQ will pay you the full elected amount (your site will be categorized). Of course, you must choose an adequate price, because if it is a very high price, maybe the network will not be able to find advertisers for you, or if your price is really low, you will be leaving money on the table.

In addition, once you configure your account (no minimum page views required), you can define which additional networks you use (Google Adsense, YPN, MSN Adcenter, etc). In this way, unsold impressions will be sent to these other networks.

This is a great alternative if you want to have a chance to sell CPM ads with a convenient price but without abandoning the traditional CPC networks where you can make money every time people click on ads. So, you can have the two types of advertising in the same spot: if ADSDAQ find an advertiser for your website, then you make money with each page view. If not, you can make money with traditional pay-per-click advertising.
